WhatsApp improves voice group calls with new features

New features added into WhatsApp group calls.

WhatsApp is bringing new features to group voice calls to improve its user experience.

From today onwards (17 June 2022), WhatsApp will feature banner notifications when a new person joins a group call (“so-and-so has joined the call”). This banner pops up even if it’s not a caller you’ve pinned to your display, helping all call participants stay aware of new joiners.

The new features are helpful seeing how WhatsApp now supports group calls of up to 32 persons.

If you have call participants with noisy backgrounds, you can also put them on mute, so that you can hear others speak more clearly without cutting them out of the call.

Finally, WhatsApp introduces the ability to message a group call participant privately. Simply select the caller and choose “Message so-and-so”, and you’d be inside a regular one-to-one WhatsApp message conversation with the recipient.

Summary of recently-launched voice messaging features on WhatsApp.

These three new tools come after a slew of improved group calling and voice messaging features WhatsApp launched recently. The app now supports 32 persons in group calls. Voice messaging comes with hands-free voice messaging (hold microphone icon to lock recording mode), the ability to review voice messages before sending, faster playback at 1.5x and 2.0x speeds, and listening to voice messages outside of a chat window.

If the new features aren't showing up yet, try updating your WhatsApp app or waiting a little longer for the new tools to surface.

The messaging app has been working hard at keeping users in its ecosystem as much as possible. WhatsApp recently gained the ability to migrate from Android to iOS, and it now allows the sharing files of up to 2GB in size.
