WhatsApp allows users to encrypt chat backups to the cloud

WhatsApp just announced that it is offering users the option to secure their chat backups with end-to-end encryption before they are uploaded to the cloud.

Over the next few weeks, WhatsApp users will see an option to generate a 64-digit encryption key which can be kept offline or in a password manager. Alternatively, they can create a password to backup the encryption key in WhatsApp's own Hardware Security Module (HSM) based Backup Key Vault.

It is important to note that if users lose or forget the 64-digit encryption key, WhatsApp will not be able to restore the chat backups. In addition, previous copies of the chat backups will be deleted once an encrypted backup is created.
