WD has announced the WD TV Play, a versatile media player which streams popular Internet channels, personal photos, music, and movies from other networked devices in the home directly to a HDTV. Users can conveniently stream movies, view the latest videos, TV shows, and stay connected to social networks through apps including YouTube, Netflix, Hulu Plus, VUDU, SlingPlayer, Spotify, Pandora, and Facebook - just to name a few. While these features aren't new to the company's WD TV series of products (which includes the WD TV Live and WD TV Live Hub), the highly affordable US$69.99 price tag is.

Content residing on any computer or NAS which has a DLNA server, such as the My Book Live personal cloud storage, or any directly connected digital camcorder, camera, or USB drive, can also be played. Full HD 1080p video streaming is possible thanks to Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and wired Ethernet support. And an HDMI port and optical digital audio output allow for a digital-only hookup. To cater to older, analog setups, there's also an AV out jack that makes use of the bundled composite AV cable.

WD also claims a very simple setup process. Once connected, users navigate the app-based UI to play their content, and they can even personalize the home screens with their favorite apps. They can even set their favorite app to automatically play when WD TV Play is turned on. In addition, the media player's new remote control features pre-programmed buttons, providing users with one-touch access to their favorite apps. A free WD TV Remote app for iOS and Android can also be downloaded to turn the smart device into an advanced remote control.

Analog AV out, HDMI, Ethernet, and optical digital audio out connections can be found at the rear of the WD TV Play.
