Western Digital has announced the launch of two new models in its My Book Desktop Storage lineup of a My Book 22TB and My Book Duo 44TB. Do note that like the others in the series, these are direct-attached storage (DAS) products as opposed to network-attached storage (NAS) ones.

The 22TB My Book is a straight-up storage device giving users the ability to back up and store thousands of documents, photos, videos and other files from a variety of storage devices including portable SSDs and HDDs, memory cards and USB flash drives. Or consolidating disparate files and records, into one location.

The larger 44TB My Book Duo comes in a RAID 0 configuration out of the box and can be reconfigured to RAID-1 for redundancy (data mirroring) or used as two independent drives with the included software.

The 44TB My Book Duo comes with a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C interface and also has two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports for additional connectivity.

Both devices come with 256-bit hardware encryption support (requires WD Security software installation on the client system to configure and use passwords). The included WD Backup software is available so the My Book devices can back up the users’ photos, videos, music, and documents.

WD released 22TB WD Red Pro drives in July last year that are NAS optimised drives. They come with 512MB of cache, a speed of 7,200 rpm, and support up to 300TB/yr workload rate. However, we weren't explicitly told that they are in use in these two DASs though it's highly likely since there aren't other 22TB internal hard drive solutions from WD.

*Update*

According to information we received from WD, both devices use 22TB Western Digital drives featuring OptiNAND technology. OptiNAND integrates an iNAND Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Embedded Flash Drive (EFD) with traditional spinning disk media utilising advanced firmware algorithms and System-on-a-Chip (SoC) modifications. It is a fundamental technology leveraged in creating the world’s first flash-enhanced drive.

Pricing and availability

The WD My Book 22TB and WD My Book Duo 44TB will be available in Singapore starting end March 2023, at Challenger and WD Official Stores on Lazada and Shopee. The My Book will be priced at S$999 while the My Book Duo will cost S$1,799.
