Want to connect to Singtel's 10Gbps fiber network? You'll need this MSI motherboard

The new C236M Workstation 10G is a micro-ATX form factor motherboard that comes integrated with a 10Gbps network controller.

Spotted at MSI's booth in Computex Taipei 2016 early this week is a board that's a perfect match for either the Singtel or Viewqwest 10Gbps fiber network. A variant of the MSI C236M Workstation product, this micro-ATX sized motherboard is an interesting option for those who wants to jump into the full 10Gbps bandwagon. Integrated into the board is an Intel X550-AT2 10Gbps network controller that lets you negotiate at the full 10Gbps speed through the common wired Ethernet connector. Using the 10GBase-T port that is compatible with 1000Base-T ports used for 1Gbps wired connection, there's little you need to change except for a Cat.6 certified cable.

The 10Gbps port is still using the familiar Ethernet port that we find in every wired Gigabit network controller. All you need is to the right Cat.6 or 6a cable with it.

The new MSI C236M Workstation board is based on the Intel C236 chipset that supports Intel Xeon E3 v5 series processors. Although the board is technically meant for high performance workstations, you can also install any compatible LGA 1511 desktop processors such as Intel Core i7/i5/i3, Pentium and Celeron. The board comes equipped with 4 DIMM slots supporting DDR4-2133 ECC modules, one PCIe 3.0 x16 graphics slot, one Turbo M.2 32Gb/s port, six SATA 6Gbps ports, six USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports and eight USB 2.0 ports.

Unlike other consumer motherboards that comes with fancy designs and colored LED lights, the C236M Workstation 10G is a no-nonsense product that comes with only the bare necessities. You won't get to tweak a lot with it, so don't expect any over-the-top overclocking features on this board. But what you do get is a 10Gbps network controller that comes right out of the box. Perhaps if there's a demand, MSI may consider integrating the Intel X550-AT2 10Gbps network controller as a standard feature in its enthusiast and gaming range of motherboards in the future. For now, we'll just settle with this. Otherwise, there are still other ways to get your computer ready for 10Gbps.
