21 April 2023 update: Vivo Singapore has come forward with local availability and pricing for the Vivo V27 series smartphones. Details are at the bottom of the piece.
Riding on the MWC 2023 wave of mobile-related announcements is Vivo, where it announced its new Vivo V27 and V27 Pro smartphones today (1 March 2023).
These phones are marketed at the TikTok generation, promising studio-tier lighting effects, fast charging, and a pretty rear plate to match their users.
Both models’ camera configurations are the same, with nearly identical components and features. Referred to as the Aura Light Portrait System, the Vivo V27 and V27 Pro feature a 50MP OIS Ultra-sensing camera, a customised Sony IMX766 sensor paired with optical stabilisation and Vivo’s proprietary computational photography algorithms. Together, these components and perks seek to provide natural-looking night portraits, with additional support for night photography via Real-Time Extreme Night Vision and better pre-capture previews.
Videography on both models taps on software that grants Super Night Video (better night footage) and Hybrid Image Stabilisation (OIS + EIS). Vivo claimed that its new computations could perform stabilisations at 10,000 times per second, on top of offering 24 templates for video effects, all backed by an improved Vlog Movie Creator that offers easier editing and portrait optimisation (improving skin texture, focus, lighting, etc.).
The Vivo V27 Pro comes with an additional Wedding Style Portrait mode that offers three filters for additional aestheticism in photos.
Both handsets also have secondary lenses to cover most shooting scenarios: an 8MP ultra-wide camera and 2MP macro camera, and a 50MP front camera with AutoFocus (for selfies).
Another main difference between Vivo V27 and V27 Pro is the chipset choice between both versions. V27 packs a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 processor, while V27 Pro uses MediaTek Dimensity 8200. However, both are still responsible for day-to-day phone performance and 5G compatibility.
The phones are otherwise similar in every other aspect. Both have a curved 6.78-inch AMOLED display rated at FHD+ resolution (2,400 x 1,080 pixels), have a maximum 120Hz refresh rate, the same RAM and storage configurations (ranging from 8GB to 12GB RAM and 128GB to 256GB for storage), along with the same 4,600mAh battery and 66W fast-charging.
As an Android 12 smartphone, Vivo uses its OS reskin called Funtouch OS 13 global, implying that both models are slated for territories outside its home market, China.
Finally, the Vivo V27 comes in four colours (Magic Blue, Emerald Green, Noble Black, and Flowing Gold) while Vivo V27 Pro offers two (Magic Blue and Noble Black). The colourways are further enhanced with special glass types to stand out from the crowded phone market – like UV colour-changing glass for Magic Blue and Emerald Green variants, embossed glitter for Noble Black, and light spot colour gradients for a ripple-like effect on Flowing Gold.
The Vivo V27 is slated for 25 markets worldwide, including Singapore. We’re still waiting on the official local prices and availability dates. The V27’s global price starts at US$399 (~S$536.24).
The Vivo V27 Pro is slated for India without mentioning availability beyond its borders. It starts at US$459 (~S$616.88).
