Many of you are probably working from home on a notebook now. And if it's a work-issued notebook, chances are, the display is probably only 13 or 14 inches large.

At this point, you are probably thinking of getting an external display, but not everyone has the space for one.

An alternative to consider is a portable monitor, like the Vissles-M that you see here.

The Vissles-M is a 15.6-inch portable touchscreen monitor that has Full-HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) and it's compatible with PCs, MACs, and even gaming consoles.

At 580g, it's light and in the hands, it feels like an oversized tablet. This means you can easily take it out and set it up when you need it and put it away when you don't. An integrated screen protector flips open to double up as a magnetic stand.

The Vissles-M accepts video inputs via a mini HDMI or USB-C. The latter is more convenient because USB-C can feed the display power too. So if your USB-C port is up to the task, it can provide both video input and power to the monitor, which means a single cable is all you need. If you are using mini HDMI as the input, you'll need a separate USB-C cable for power.

If you are using it with a gaming console like the PlayStation 4, there's a 3.5mm audio jack that will be handy for plugging in headphones or extra speakers. The Vissles-M has built-in speakers but they are best described as functional.

One thing to note is that the type of USB-C cable that you use. Cables used for charging cannot deliver video data to the Vissles-M. Fortunately, Vissles provides just about all the cables you would need. In the box you'll find the following:

  • Mini HDMI to HDMI
  • USB-C to USB-C (for video and power)
  • USB-A to USB-C (for power)

I have been playing around with the Vissles-M for a few weeks and I found the touchscreen display to be fairly responsive and picture quality to be adequate.

Given that it's USB-powered, I was surprised to find that it gets quite bright. However, there's a haziness to the visuals and input lag was noticeable. It's good enough for checking and typical emails, and as a secondary display for showing videos, but I won't want to be doing colour critical work, like editing photos, on it.

All things considered, the Vissles-M is worth considering if you need a second display but might not have space for it. At 15.6 inches, its large enough for work and a step up from your 13 or 14-inch notebooks. Furthermore, it's ease of use and portability means it's easy to set up and put away when you have no need for it.

The Vissles-M is available now at a special promo price of US$199 (~S$271) at the Vissles online store. This makes it substantially more affordable than other portable monitors like the Lenovo ThinkVision M14t and ASUS ZenScreen Touch.
