Verizon Media has entered into an agreement with Automattic Inc., the parent company behind WordPress, under which the latter will acquire Tumblr for an undisclosed sum. Tumblr was an extremely popular microblogging platform that was founded by David Karp in 2007.

It was acquired by Yahoo in 2013 for US$1.1 billion, and in 2017, the platform was sold to Verizon Media for US$350 million. The decision to disallow “adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity…..” caused an exodus of users.

The new owner of Tumblr will take on the existing 200 staff members of Tumblr, and the ban on adult content will stay in spite of the change of ownership.

Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg said,

“Tumblr is one of the Web’s most iconic brands. It is an essential venue to share new ideas, cultures and experiences, helping millions create and build communities around their shared interests. We are excited to add it to our lineup, which already includes WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Simplenote, Longreads, and more.”

The CEO also added that he has been a long-time user of Tumblr and the platform’s “strong mobile interface and dashboard” is complementary to the services and functionality of WordPress.
