In case you’re unaware, Huawei is set to unveil its new flagship phone, the Huawei P40 series in Paris, France this Thursday, March 26.

Based on latest rumours, barring any surprises, the P40 series will come in three variants: the standard P40, a higher-end P40 Pro and the flagship P40 Pro Plus.

The Pro Plus name is quite funny if true, though I kind of understanding what Huawei is trying to say: the phone is the P40 Pro — and then some.

Based on rumours, the P40 Pro Plus is the only model in the P40 series to feature a penta-camera setup, headlined by a 52MP Sony IMX700 sensor for the primary shooter. This 1/1.28-inch sensor is said to use a ‘Hexadeca Bayer’ setup with an RYYB filter, which suggests it’s capable of a couple rounds of pixel binning to produce lower-res (likely 13MP by default) but also lower-noise images.

The other big sensor on the P40 Pro Plus is said to be the Sony IMX650, a 1/1.5-inch, 40MP unit with an RGGB filter. Paired with an 18mm Cine lens, this will power the Pro Plus’ ultra-wide-angle features.

The P40 Pro Plus is also expected to come with not one but two telephoto lenses. One of them is an 8MP, f/2.0 module that provides 3x optical zoom and the other is a periscope camera that features two plastic and one glass elements and offers 10x optical zoom (240mm equivalent). Would the P40 Pro Plus come with a 100x zoom setting like the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra?

Finally, the fifth ‘camera’ is basically a ToF sensor for enhanced depth sensing.

A crazy camera aside, there are other things that differentiate the P40 Pro Plus from the Pro. For one, it’s expected to have a larger, higher-res OLED screen (6.7-inch, 3,160 x 1,440 pixels vs. 6.6-inch, 2K resolution) with a higher 120Hz refresh rate (90Hz on the Pro), up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage and a beefier 5,500mAh battery that supports 55W SuperCharge (4,200mAh and 40W expected on the Pro).

Finally, to bring it well over the top, the Pro Plus is said to sport a ceramic body.

If there's anything the P40 Pro Plus (and the other P40 models, too) doesn't have, it'll be Google Mobile Services and Google apps. Huawei's AppGallery is one app store alternative, but there are also other methods you can try.
