UberASSIST launches in Singapore to lend senior citizens a helping hand

UberASSIST is now available in Singapore.

Uber has just announced the local launch of its ASSIST program to help passengers with mobility difficulties get around. UberASSIST is already available in several US cities and other select markets.

According to the National Council for Social Service (NCSS), around 110,000 Singaporeans have some form of disability. Singapore also happens to have the highest proportion of senior citizens and the fastest aging population in Southeast Asia, which means that getting from place to place will be a growing challenge for an increasing number of people.

The new program launches with just a few dozen drivers, which Uber says puts it in a position to assist thousands of disabled or elderly passengers a month. By October 2016, Uber hopes to increase this number to the tens of thousands.

Uber is working with the Disabled People’s Association of Singapore (DPA) and LevelField to offer UberASSIST in Singapore. However, not just any Uber driver can be part of the program as Uber says that only top-rated drivers will be eligible. In addition, these drivers will have to undergo a one-day training program by LevelField to learn more about the needs of the disabled and elderly and how to assist riders into vehicles.

Starting today, passengers will be able to use UberASSIST by entering “ASSISTSG” as a promotion code in their Uber app. They will then get a pop-up message informing them that they have unlocked UberASSIST, after which they will be able to request a ride as per usual.

The new service will be available at the same rates as existing UberX cars, which amounts to a S$3.50 base fare combined with a S$0.25/min and S$0.50/km charge.
