Two Taiwanese AMOLED Manufacturers to Start Mass Production in Q3 2012

The dominance of Korean AMOLED manufacturers will be challenged by their Taiwanese counterparts very soon. According to Mr. Li Chang, Deputy Secretary General of the Taipei Computer Association, made-in-Taiwan AMOLED panels will start shipping by Q3 of this year.

Display Taiwan is a trade show that is targeted at customers who are sourcing for flat panel display solutions for their differing requirements. By next year's show, AMOLED panels will be the highlight as Taiwanese manufacturers show off their own wares.

Mr. Li said that the local AMOLED manufacturers have started shipping samples to their customers already. He said that when the two local manufacturers begin mass production in Q3 this year, the total number of AMOLED manufacturers will total four and the existing Korean manufacturers; who have been dominating this sector, will have their exclusivity removed. AMOLED displays are popularly featured in smartphones due to their requirements for smaller screens, their usage in desktop monitors are not common due to their expensive price tags. With the emergence of the Taiwanese AMOLED manufacturers, we may see a shift in the usage of AMOLED panels due to their possible price reductions in the face of the nascent Taiwanese challenge.
