Two former Mercedes engineers join Special Projects Group at Apple
Apple appears to have poached two engineers from Mercedes for its electric vehicle (EV) project.
MacRumours has learnt that two former Mercedes engineers were hired by Apple to join its Special Projects Group. The leading new hire previously worked on the mass production of vehicles, vehicle steering, dynamics, software and project management at Mercedes. Prior to joining Mercedes, the hire worked at Porsche.
Apple has been hiring executives from other automakers in recent years. The company hired former Telsa VP of Vehicle Engineering and former Aston Martin Chief Engineer Chris Porritt in 2016. It also managed to poach Dr Manfred Harrer, Porsche's former VP of chassis development earlier this year.
While the EV team lost several top managers this year, Apple is said to be actively hiring industry veterans to fill up the leadership team. In addition, Bloomberg claims there are hundreds of engineers working on the self-driving car technology and a team of engineers working on a car. Japanese and Korean suppliers are tipped to be suppliers of components for Apple's EV project.
