TSMC is set to start mass production of 3nm chips later this week.

DigiTimes claims TSMC will start commercial production of 3nm chips at the Southern Taiwan Science Park on 29 December. This is in line with an April report stating TSMC is on track for 3nm chip production in the second half of the year.

As Apple is the biggest customer of TSMC, some of the 3nm chips will be used in the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models which should be expected to launch by the first half of 2023.

TSMC is also expected to use a second-generation 3nm process to manufacture the M3 and A17 chips. Known as N3E, it will deliver better performance and higher power efficiency compared to the first-generation 3nm process (N3).

Sources told DigiTimes the production of 3nm chips is "unlikely to ramp up" until production of the second-generation 3nm chips is underway.
