TSMC announces plan to build a $12 billion chip plant in the U.S

Apple chip maker TSMC just announced its plan to build and operate an advanced chip plant in the U.S.

The chip plant will be located in Arizona and will use TSMC's 5nm technology for chip fabrication. It has a 20,000 semiconductor wafer per month capacity. Construction of the plant is scheduled to start in 2021 with production slated to begin in 2024.

TSMC says it will spend about US$12 billion from 2021 to 2029 on this project. When completed, the chip plant will create over 1,600 high-tech professional jobs and thousands of indirect jobs in the semiconductor ecosystem.

TSMC currently operates a fab in Camas, Washington and design centers in both Austin, Texas and San Jose, California. The Arizona facility would be its second manufacturing site in the U.S.
