The dark fantasy series is coming back for seconds.

HBO and BBC have released a trailer for the second season of their fantasy drama, His Dark Materials. It might surprise you to learn that it's coming out this very year, since most productions have been halted due to the pandemic. Fortunately, it looks like most of Season 2 was filmed beforehand. Well, most of it...

Watch the trailer below:

Announced during a virtual San Diego Comic Con panel, the second season of His Dark Materials will only be seven episodes long. This is because an eighth episode starring James McAvoy’s Lord Asriel was left incomplete due to the ongoing pandemic - and will likely be released at a later date once production can resume.

The second season of His Dark Materials will cover the second book in Philip Pullman’s trilogy, The Subtle Knife. We see series newcomer Andrew Scott mention the knife in the trailer, explaining that it can cut between worlds. The show has become increasingly focused on alternate worlds and travelling between them, so a knife like this could be useful for our heroes.

Here’s HBO’s summary of the season:

In the second season of His Dark Materials, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) has opened a bridge to a new world, and, distraught over the death of her best friend, Lyra (Dafne Keen) follows Asriel into the unknown. In a strange and mysterious abandoned city she meets Will (Amir Wilson), a boy from our world who is also running from a troubled past. Lyra and Will learn their destinies are tied to reuniting Will with his father but find their path is constantly thwarted as a war begins to brew around them. Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson) searches for Lyra, determined to bring her home by any means necessary.

Season 2 of His Dark Materials will make its debut in Fall 2020. It will also feature a mini Fleabag reunion!
