A top phone brand is using Synaptics' in-display fingerprint sensor

Smartphones with in-display fingerprint sensors are coming as soon as next year.

According to the latest press release from Synaptics, it announced mass production of its new Clear ID FS9500 family of optical in-display fingerprint sensors with a top five OEM. Its press release also provides hints of which top phone vendor it is working with.

Designed for smartphones with infinity displays, Synaptics' Clear ID in-display fingerprint sensors magically activate in the display only when needed. Clear ID is faster than alternative biometrics such as 3D facial, highly-secure with SentryPoint™ technology, and very convenient with one-touch/one-step biometric authentication directly in the touchscreen display area of smartphones.

The Clear ID FS9500 optical fingerprint  sensors can scan through full cover glass and enable sleek, button-free, bezel-free infinity displays. Not only can they work with wet, dry and cold fingers, they are also scratchproof and waterproof.

The top five OEM is likely to be Samsung; Synaptics was rumored to be working with Samsung on the optical in-display fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S8, but development was plagued with time constraints and technical issues. It would be interesting to see how Synaptics' FS9500 in-display fingerprint sensors fare against Apple's Face ID technology since the former claims that it is twice as fast as 3D facial recognition.
