TikTok's latest AR effect utilises the iPhone 12 Pro's LiDAR camera.
Announced via a tweet, TikTok says the AR effect is the first to use LiDAR technology on the iPhone 12 Pro. The AR effect shows a virtual disco ball with a countdown timer and a "2021" sign will pop up once the timer hits zero. In addition, the person and his/her surroundings will be covered in virtual confetti. The virtual confetti actually stays on the real-life surfaces, which make the AR effect more realistic.
TikTok says it will be developing more innovative effects this year. The company is not alone in this space; Snapchat allowed users to create their own AR filters using the iPhone 12's LiDAR camera in October 2020.
