For those of you who love sneakers, you’re probably of the opinion that there’s no such thing as having too many pairs of shoes. But what if the same pair of shoes could take on multiple designs? Would that then be a reason to stick with fewer pairs? David Coelho is exploring that question with ShiftWear, sneakers with color e-paper displays on their sides that can display custom designs from your phone or tablet in just seconds.

The project has already drawn in over US$61,000 on Indiegogo, or 245% of its initial funding goal. With 22 days left, you still have time to pledge US$150 to help out and get yourself a pair of ShiftWear L1 Classics, which is actually the low-cut model and also the cheapest.

Coelho is also offering higher-cut models in the form of the ShiftWear M1 Classic and H1 Classic, which you’ll have to plunk down US$250 and US$350 for respectively.
The e-paper display used is flexible, which probably bodes well for overall comfort. They can display static, HD resolution images without consuming any battery, but if you’re feeling particularly flamboyant, they can be set to display animations as well.

There’s even no need to worry about the limitations of having electronics in your shoes as the sneakers are reportedly machine washable and are waterproof up to 5m. The team is even citing features like Kevlar fiber-coated soles and a walk-to-charge technology.

Still, even though they’ve exceeded their funding goal, there’s no guarantee that we’ll actually see the final product. But one can have faith, right? If all goes as planned, the sneakers will start shipping in the fall of 2016.
