There's no 5G phone yet but Qualcomm already has a second-generation 5G modem
No one has a 5G phone yet but that has stopped Qualcomm from announcing its second-generation 5G modem.
The new modem is called the Snapdragon X55 and it succeeds the X50. The X50 was only announced in late 2016.
The key highlight of the Snapdragon X55 is undoubtedly its speed. Qualcomm claims download speeds of up to 7Gbps is possible - that's a 55% increase over the X50's 4.5Gbps.
It will also support all major frequency bands, making it suitable for deployment just about anywhere in the world.
There's also support for adaptive antenna tuning for sub-5GHz 5G, which should help with lowering power consumption.
The Snapdragon X55 is currently being sampled by customers and the first devices to feature the new model are expected to be rolled out later this year. Here's a quick video overview from Qualcomm:-
