Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon have released the first trailer for animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, set to hit theatres on August 31.

After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts.

Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.

Nevertheless, the trailer feels distinctly light-hearted, and Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello are clearly teenagers just goofing about. Fans will also notice the unique visual aesthetic, which has a rough-around-the-edges look to them, like they were plucked straight from a sketchbook.

In fact, director Jeff Rowe has said that the film was inspired by sketches he made during high school, which explains a lot.

The film is backed by a star-studded cast, including the likes of Seth Rogen, John Cena, Jackie Chan, Ice Cube, and Paul Rudd.
