A French scientist from the University of Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris discovered a new method that allows people to write with their eyes in cursive script on a computer display. John Lorenceau, the director of the University’s French National Center for Scientific Research, uses a small infrared video camera that can translate eye movements into a graphical representation. Apart from the apparatus, Lorenceau employs an optical illusion technique called ‘reverse phimotion’ to reduce the effect of saccade - rapid involuntary eye movements. Combined with this technique, people will be able to write with their eyes more fluidly in cursive script. Lorenceau claims that the new method enables users to write on a computer screen at a pace of 20 to 30 characters in a minute, after three to five 30-minute training sessions. The new discovery can be used to help people with severe disabilities.
