Juicy Star Wars news always comes out on May the 4th.

Disney and Lucasfilm announced yesterday that a new Star Wars film is on the way, and it will be directed by Taika Waititi. Waititi will also co-write the movie with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who recently wrote 1917 and Edgar Wright’s upcoming Last Night in Soho

Waititi recently directed the season one finale of The Mandalorian, along with Jojo Rabbit - a movie that earned a ton of Oscar nominations at the 2020 Academy Awards. Rumours of Waititi directing a Star Wars movie originally surfaced in January, but at the time, the director kept mum on the project, stating that he would, “want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”

Disney and Lucasfilm also confirmed the existence of the new live-action Star Wars TV series currently in development, which we reported on earlier. The series will come from the creator of Netflix’s Russian Doll, Leslye Headland and reportedly focus on female characters.

Star Wars Day also revealed that several big-name directors will be stepping up to direct future episodes of Disney+’s The Mandalorian. Alita: Battle Angel and Sin City director Robert Rodriguez posted up a picture of himself with Baby Yoda, stating that he had directed, “the biggest star in the universe.” He is correct.

Peyton Reed, director of Marvel Studio’s Ant-Man movies also confirmed that he took the director’s chair for a spin at some point too:

With all these movies and TV shows in production, it looks like Star Wars fans are going to have a pretty great few years of content!
