Tag Heuer has just announced its second generation smartwatch. It is called the Modular Connected 45  and will be powered by an Intel processor and will run Android Wear 2.0.

It might look like its first smartwatch - the Tag Heuer Connected - but it is radically different in its design.

As you might be able to tell from its name, it features a highly modular construction. The watch case, lugs, strap, and deployant can be swapped out and changed.

The watch head is offered in stainless steel or titanium, but it will be offered with a variety of different types of bezels in aluminum, stainless steel, and ceramic. In all, Tag Heuer says that there are over 56 variations that can be customized.

As suggested by its name, the Modular Connected 45 will feature a 45mm wide case. That is a bit large, but it is necessary for its sizable display. The display measures 1.39-inch and it is using AMOLED technology and protected by a 2.5mm thick sheet of sapphire glass. It is also a fully round display without a flat bottom that you see on some other round-faced smartwatches like the Moto 360.

The Modular Connected 45 will also come with 30 watch faces, but users can create their own with the Tag Heuer Studio app that will come with the watch.

Inside, the watch is powered by an Intel Atom Z34XX processor, which will offer up to 25 hours worth of battery life. There's GPS and NFC, but no LTE or heart rate monitor. Water resistance is an adequate 50 meters, which means you can go swimming with the Modular Connected 45.

The Modular Connected 45 will also have all the usual features you'll expect to find from a competent Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch, including fitness tracking, notifications, Android Pay, and Google Assistant.

Tag Heuer has always been keen to combat the issue of obsolescence in smartwatches and that is the key reason behind the Modular Connected 45's modular design. Since the modular construction allows the watch head to be swapped, this means owners will be able to easily upgrade when Tag Heuer releases a successor to this model.

In addition, the modular construction will also allow owners of the Modular Connected 45 to swap watch heads with two of Tag Heuer's mechanical models, namely the Calibre 5 - a simple three-hander that shows the time and date - and the more complicated Calibre 02T - Tag Heuer's new entry-level tourbillon watch.

Also, Tag Heuer is keen to point out that its new smartwatch qualifies for the "Swiss Made" label, as over 60% of the manufacturing costs of this watch is now incurred in Switzerland. Furthermore, the watch's final assembly is done in Switzerland.

The Tag Heuer Modular Connected 45 is available now with prices beginning from S$2400.
