Tablet shipments grew 53% YoY in Q1 2021 with Apple and Samsung gaining shares

The Apple iPad Air (2020) was the second best-selling model in Q1 2021.

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a spike in global tablet shipments with 53% YoY in Q1 2021 according to Counterpoint Research's latest Global Tablet Market Report.

Apple and Samsung were able to expand their market shares for the past year. Apple saw a 7% growth while Samsung grew 4% from the same period a year ago. Counterpoint claims Apple sold 33% more iPads in 2020 than in 2019 with all major regions seeing better performance.

The entry-level iPad is without a doubt the most popular model; it accounted for 56% of the overall iPad shipments. The iPad Air (2020) and iPad Pro series were popular as well with 19% and 18% shares respectively.

Overall, the global tablet market growth is driven by increasing demand for large-screen mobile devices spurred by remote work, online learning and stay-at-home orders. Global 5G phone shipments and smartwatches also grew in Q1 2021.
