Synology unveils two 12-bay tower NASs to cater to SMB demand

Synology has announced the launch of two new 12-bay tower NASs that will help them better reach out to SMBs.

The higher-end DS3622xs+ is powered by a 6-core 2.2GHz Intel Xeon processor and 16GB of RAM. It is also equipped with dual 10GbE RJ-45 ports and three Gigabit ports, the DS3622xs+ delivers fast networking and out-of-band management (OOB) management right out of the box while supporting integration with Fibre Channel SAN.

According to Synology, in internal testing, the unit delivered over 260,000 4K random read IOPS and 4,700/2,400 MB/s sequential read/write speeds respectively.

The DS2422+ is designed to deliver reliability and efficiency and is powered by an AMD Ryzen quad-core 2.2GHz processor and 4GB of RAM. Lacking 10 Gigabit Ethernet, which is a common feature in mainstream models, it integrates with existing IT infrastructure thanks to four Gigabit RJ-45 ports for network connectivity. It can deliver 2,200/1,300 MB/s sequential read/write speeds.

Commonalities with room to grow

Both units allow for expansion with 10/25GbE network interface cards. NVMe SSD cache can be added through M.2 NVMe SSD adapter cards to boost random I/O performance for hot data. Combination cards allow 10GbE connectivity and SSD cache to be added through a single PCIe 3.0 slot.

Storage capacity can easily be doubled in the case of the DS2422+, or tripled for the DS3622xs+, by connecting the appropriate number of 12-bay DX1222 expansion units.

The two NASs and expansion units are designed to work optimally with Synology’s own enterprise drives, the HAT5300 3.5-inch SATA HDD and SAT5200 2.5-inch SATA SSD and be managed by Synology’s DSM 7.0 NAS operating system.

Pricing and availability

The expansion unit looks a lot like the two new NASs.

All three units are now available from Synology resellers and partners. The DS2422+ is priced at S$2,939 while the DS3622xs+ will cost S$4,559. The DX1222 expansion unit will cost S$1,799 each.
