Synology's RT6600ax router taps into the "clean" 5.9GHz Wi-Fi 6 spectrum for more consistent performance
At first glance, it's easy to dismiss Synology's RT6600ax router as another run-of-the-mill Wi-Fi 6 router. After all, it isn't exactly new – it was launched in other parts of the world last year – and it doesn't have any headline-grabbing specs. But networking enthusiasts know better.
This is one of the few routers to support the 5.9GHz spectrum of Wi-Fi 6. The back story is lengthy but to put it very briefly, it allows routers to tap into new and "clean" non-DFS channels allowing the router to deliver maximum Wi-Fi 6 performance.
This new spectrum was officially freed up and approved for use by the FCC in late 2020. And because it isn't affected by DFS, you don't have to worry about performance being compromised if you happen to be in an area that's affected by DFS signals.
Of course, you'll need your client devices to support this new spectrum too and that may or may not come with a firmware update. You'll need to check with your device manufacturer to know for sure.
The rest of the RT6600ax router is fairly ordinary. It's a tri-band router with a quad-core 1.8GHz processor and it supports speeds of up to 6,600Mbps.
To get that bandwidth, it supports speeds of up to 4,800Mbps on one of its 5GHz bands, 1,200Mbps on its the other 5GHz band, and 600Mbps on its 2.4GHz band.
As for ports, it has a single 2.5GbE port that can work in WAN or LAN configuration, a single Gigabit Ethernet WAN port, and three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports. It also has a single USB-A USB 3.0 port.
