Synology has been a brand known for having NAS enclosures for any need and multiple price points. Now they've announced the launch of their latest 5-bay DiskStation DS1520+, that is scalable enough to build your own private cloud.

The NAS has five drive bays with each supporting either 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA HDDs or SSDs disk drives up to 16TB per drive for a total of 80TB of storage

It is powered by a 64-bit quad-core Intel Celeron J4125 chipset and uses two M.2 slots for SSD caching. There is also 8GB of RAM thanks to the installed two 4GB DIMM modules. The M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots permit cache acceleration without needing to occupy any of the storage drive bays.

In terms of connectivity, there are four Gigabit Ethernet ports with Link Aggregation, two USB 3.0 ports, and two eSATA ports.

The storage capacity of DS1520+ can be expanded by attaching two Synology DX517 Expansion Units, each purchased separately. This increases the maximum raw storage capacity up to 15 disk drives, each capable of up to 16TB of storage, to a theoretical maximum of 240TB if maxed out.

On its own, the DS1520+ represents an improvement over the previous DS1019+. The Intel Celeron Processor J4125 mentioned earlier, gives the DS1520+ provides a performance boost that sees a 126% increase in website responsiveness and a 19.8% increase in compute-tasks.

Software to make it complete

Rounding everything out is some software Synology included.

The DS1520+ comes with Synology Collaboration Suite, a productivity and file sharing solution that allows team collaboration while leveraging the advantages of a private cloud to fully control data and prevent data leaks. Some key features include:

  • With Synology Office’s cross-office file syncing and sharing solution, users can synchronise data across individual sites, making large and frequently accessed files available on local networks, while sharing permissions to ensure that only the files that need to be shared are available.
  • Use Synology Chat to talk to other collaborators directly within the document.
  • Synology Drive makes it possible for every home and office to host their own cloud with total data ownership and no subscription fees. Simply choose your Synology NAS as the host server and install Synology Drive Server on it. Each paired PC you want to sync or back up with must have the desktop application, Synology Drive Client (available at Synology Download Center), installed. You can then preform file syncing and PC backups from multiple client computers to a centralised server.

It also features HTTPS support, a built-in firewall, and multiple IP and account intrusion auto-blocking mechanisms.

The Synology DS1520+ is available today from Synology resellers and partners in Singapore for S$1,089. Interested readers can check this page for more information.
