The Apple Watch Series 7.

Apple did not introduce any groundbreaking features this year with the Apple Watch Series 7, but the Apple Watch Series 8 should have one based on the latest rumours.

According to DigiTimes, Apple suppliers are reportedly working on components for the next-generation of sensors for use on smartwatches. These components are short-wavelength infrared LED devices that can be used to monitor heart rates, blood oxygen saturation and blood glucose.

Apple has been rumoured for many years to be working on blood glucose monitoring technology. CNBC reported in 2017 that Apple has a team of biomedical engineers working on sensors to monitor blood glucose levels. Earlier this year, ETNews claims that Apple will add a non-invasive optical sensor.

The Telegraph published a report in May that several blood-related health features could be coming to the Apple Watch due to the ongoing “supply and development” agreement between Apple and Rocky Photonics. The Wall Street Journal made a similar claim last month. However, Bloomberg’s sources expect the blood glucose monitoring feature to be ready in the next few years.
