Netflix has announced that, together distributors Goodfellas and GKIDS, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron (Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru Ka) will stream on Netflix globally – except the US and Japan.

A separate announcement on the streaming premiere date will be made later this year.

Netflix has also extended its agreement with the Oscar-winning Japanese studio Studio Ghibli to continue streaming all 22 of the studio’s films, including beloved classics such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Arrietty, Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, among others.

The Boy and the Heron marks Miyazaki’s return after a decade-long hiatus. It is not just any animated feature, but a hand-drawn, heartfelt narrative, rooted in Miyazaki’s childhood recollections. It was recently crowned with the 2024 Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
