Starhub teams up with Malaysia's U Mobile for 5G SA roaming trials

Starhub is partnering with Malaysia's U Mobile to conduct one of the world's first 5G standalone (5G SA) roaming trials. 5G can be categorised as either standalone (SA) or non-standalone (NSA) – SA requires more work to implement, but it's independent of existing 4G networks and forms the foundation for future 5G architecture. Most roaming trials today still use 5G NSA technology, so the Starhub and U Mobile trial comprises a pretty significant milestone for the industry.

Both telcos will use the test to ensure a more seamless 5G roaming experience for customers who frequently travel between Singapore and Malaysia. This includes figuring out the right network configurations through performance monitoring, in addition to looking into things like the right price point for 5G roaming in both countries.

The trial could benefit more than just regular consumers as well. The healthcare industry could potentially take advantage of the faster speeds for things like cross-border remote surgeries, and the hope is that the new collaboration will speed up the adoption of 5G services in both Singapore and Malaysia.

The first tests are expected to take place in the first quarter of 2020 and will be conducted in collaboration with Huawei. They will cover use cases such as live cross-border holographic calls and multi-party video calls.
