StarHub’s TV+ Pro Box adds oomph to home viewing by bringing Dolby and B&O to the mix
StarHub’s new TV+ Pro Box adds Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, and audio tuning by Bang & Olufsen to act like a soundbar bringing a cinematic experience to subscribers as they watch the latest EPL matches or series over streaming services like Netflix or Disney+.
Larger than the older TV+ box, the new TV+ Pro Box looks like the new Apple Mac Studio or Logitech’s Logi Dock. Yann Courqueux, Vice President of Home Product, StarHub said:
We are thrilled to deliver the best TV experience to StarHub customers with TV+ Pro, working with partners such as Dolby and Bang & Olusfen, for their renowned video and audio technologies. Offering unmatched immersion, TV+ Pro enables customers to enjoy their favourite content such as Premier League games on a whole-new level, soaking in the thrilling atmosphere of live matches without stepping out the door.
It runs on the latest Operator Tier version of Android TV 11, the plug-and-play StarHub TV+ Pro Box supports both wired and wireless connectivity for supporting Ultra HD content (4K) content over popular streaming apps such as Disney+, Netflix, Viu, and more that come preloaded. Other features include access to the Google Play store and Google Assistant, which allows customers to navigate seamlessly between live channels, VODs, and OTT services with voice control.
The Operator tier is a version of Android that allows service providers like StarHub to mould elements of it to fit their products. It will be locked to subscribers.
The company launched their first TV+ Android-based box in late 2020 and it took a few updates to get it to a watchable level. Since then, they’ve been adding streaming services to it and turned it into a true OTT entertainment box, and frankly speaking, one of the best Android TV boxes you can get in the local market.
However, unlike the StarHub TV+ box that allows one to channel surf to watch free-to-air channels when used with a designated StarHub-supplied router on StarHub broadband, the new TV+ Pro Box only allows you to watch free-to-air-channels via the free meWatch app on the box. What this means is you can't just punch in channel number 102, for example, to watch Channel 5 programming anymore, but you'll have to fire up the app to invoke this channel. It might sound cumbersome for most of us who've grown up knowing these channel numbers by heart, but this also means the TV+ Pro Box is much more easily deployable with any fibre service provider and router hardware. You don't have to worry about compatibility moving forward.
Available from tomorrow, new and existing StarHub TV+ customers can sign-up contract-free (requires at least a basic TV+ pass subscription) for the TV+ Pro Box at S$14.90 monthly. At launch, the TV+ Pro can be delivered to customers' homes at no extra cost. Customers have the option of self-pick-up from the StarHub shops at Plaza Singapura, NEX, Tampines, and Jurong Point.
