StarHub is launching its own Android TV streaming box

StarHub unveiled the StarHub Go Streaming Box yesterday, an Android TV box that will let users stream up to 50 TV channels from StarHub's Go streaming service as well as access apps and content from the Google Play store.

The box is powered by Android TV Oreo and is the first in the world to run on the "Operator Tier", which means it uses its own custom UI, rather than the stock Android UI. StarHub's custom UI organizes content into tabs, with titles that are part of its StarHub Go packs aggregated onto a ’discover’ tab and categorized according to genre.

The box is compatible with the rest of StarHub's Go ecosystem, which lets customers easily switch between content on their TV and smart devices and also has a built in Google Chromecast to allow customers to stream video content to the TV set from their smart devices.

“Our customers want the freedom to choose which programmes to watch, where to watch and when to watch it, and the StarHub Go Streaming Box delivers on every front,” said Justin Ang, Head of Product, StarHub. “With just a few clicks, customers can easily access all their favourite content from StarHub Go and other streaming apps on a single platform. Customers who binge-watch StarHub Go content on the go using their smartphones will also love the seamless experience of returning home and resuming from where they last stopped on the big screen.”

The Go streaming box supports Ultra HD 4K content, however, StarHub does not currently broadcast any content in 4K, although this may change in future. The box also supports HDR content through the HDR10 standard.

The StarHub Go Streaming Box will be available on 5th September for S$14.90 per month when purchased  together with a StarHub 1Gbps Fibre Broadband at $39.90 per month, with a 24-month contract. Alternatively, the box is also available as a stand-alone product at an introductory price of S$199 (usual price: S$249).

If purchased as part of a Fibre Broadband package, the Go streaming box will come with a 24-month subscription to Go Family. If purchased separately, it will come with a six-month subscription (usual price: S$14.90/month).

StarHub will also be offering exclusive promotions for the box at Comex 2018 next week, however details have not been announced yet.
