Fans aren’t liking this move one bit.

Crystal Dynamics just announced that Spider-Man will join Marvel’s Avengers as a playable hero - but there’s a catch. The webbed menace will be available exclusively for PlayStation console owners only. If you were planning to play the game on PC, Xbox One or Google Stadia - you’re going to lose out.

Currently, it’s unclear if the Spider-Man joining Marvel’s Avengers is the same one seen in the PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man games. In a new PlayStation blog post however, Crystal Dynamics explained that the hero will only join the game in early 2021, and they’re already hard at work developing the character.

They mention taking inspiration from classic Spider-Man comics by Steve Ditko and John Romita, Sr. - both in terms of fashion and function. Much like Marvel’s Avengers’ other playable heroes, Spider-Man will come with unique skill trees and upgradeable gear. He’ll also feel, “graceful and light,” with, “a variety of web configurations and gadgets,” to make level traversal feel fun.

Crystal Dynamics also announced that Spider-Man will make his debut with an in-game event in early 2021. The event will introduce him to the world of Marvel’s Avengers, and introduce unique challenges with ‘exciting results’. Multiple cosmetic options and ‘gameplay experience options’ will be available for players to build their own version of Spider-Man unique to their playstyle.

Given that Spider-Man is arguably the most universally loved superhero in existence, you can imagine how well fans are reacting to him being locked behind PlayStation consoles. Some worry about what this means for the story of Marvel’s Avengers. Some wish they could just play as Spider-Man on PC. Others say that this isn’t even the worst example of PlayStation exclusivity.

Marvel’s Avengers will launch on September 4, 2020 on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One and Google Stadia. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players will exclusively receive Spider-Man when the character is released, free of charge. Hawkeye has also been announced as a post-launch hero.
