South Korean government steps in to investigate the Galaxy Note7
Despite devoting significant resources and manpower to look into the matter, Samsung still doesn't know what went wrong with the Galaxy Note7. This prompted the South Korean government to launch its own investigation.
Yonhap News Agency reports that the state-run Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL) started its own investigation last Thursday after receiving five burnt Galaxy Note7 units from Samsung. KTL reportedly will use the latest testing technologies such as X-ray and computerized tomography to determine the exact cause(s) of the problem. A Samsung official has confirmed this report:
"We have handed over the phones (that caught fire) to KTL and will cooperate with their investigation, but we can't just sit and wait for its result," a Samsung Electronics official said. "We have been mobilizing all possible resources to find the exact cause of the problems as soon as possible."
Several theories have surfaced on the cause of the explosion; Financial Times claimed that Samsung engineers tweaked the processor of the Galaxy Note7 to speed up charging rate which overloaded the battery. Samsung could have rushed through several critical testing stages in order to bring the Galaxy Note7 to market ahead of the iPhone 7. In a statement released last Friday, Samsung stated that it will be sharing findings in the coming weeks on why the Galaxy Note7 exploded.
