It's finally here. Sony has just unveiled its new flagship-class true wireless earbuds and, just as we expected, it's called the WF-1000XM5.

With the WF-1000XM5, Sony has sought to make its flagship earbuds better by addressing all, if not most, of the complaints levelled at its predecessor – the WF-1000XM4.

To start, these new earbuds are lighter and more compact. According to Sony, it's 25% smaller and 20% lighter, which should provide better wearing comfort. The charging case is smaller too, so it'll slip into pockets more easily.

Happily, battery life remains roughly the same. You get 8 hours of playback with ANC from a single charge, and the charging case provides another two full charges for a total of 24 hours. It charges over USB-C and wireless charging.

The active noise cancellation has been improved too. The WF-1000XM5 has two noise-cancelling processors called the Integrated Processor V2 and HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN2e, and these work together with three microphones, and specially-developed ear tips to "cancel more external noise than ever."

The WF-1000XM5 has a new driver too called the Dynamic Driver X. It's moderately sized at just 8.4mm and Sony says its diaphragm structure uses several different materials to achieve low distortion.

On the connectivity front, the WF-1000XM5 supports Bluetooth 5.3 and supported codecs include SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3. Crucially, it also supports multipoint connection and can be paired with two devices simultaneously.

On paper, the WF-1000XM5 doesn't sound dramatically different to its predecessor, but it improves on several important aspects, namely wearing comfort, active noise cancellation, and connectivity. We hope to bring you a full review soon.
