Sony has just dropped a cryptic teaser on its Facebook page. The teaser says "The best silence drops" and lists a reveal date of 24 July 2023, 9am PT. That means 12am on 25 July 2023.

If we had to guess, we'd say Sony is hinting at the unveiling of its eagerly anticipated new flagship-class true wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation – hence the reference to silence. No one knows what it's going to be called, but there's a good chance it'd be named the WF-1000XM5

The latest renders of these earbuds reveal a slightly more compact design for both the earbuds and the charging case. Despite the slightly smaller charging case, rumours say battery life is expected to remain the same at around 24 hours.

Back in March, it was rumoured that the WF-1000XM5 would have an additional driver, which would make it the first Sony true wireless earbuds to feature a dual-driver setup. One thing that the rumours got right was that the WF-1000XM5 would be announced between May and August.

The old WF-1000XM4 was an almost perfect set of true wireless earbuds with great noise cancelling and sound, and a decent battery life. However, it lacked support for multipoint connection at launch (a recent firmware update fixed this, but it came nearly two years after launch) and its transparency mode sounded unnatural. Hopefully, its successor will be able to improve on these aspects.

At any rate, all will be revealed soon, so remember to mark your calendars. If you are in Singapore, the reveal is going to be at 12am on 25 July, 2023
