Sony has just released a new open-back headphone and condenser microphone designed for content creators and sound engineers.
The open-back headphone is called the MDR-MV1 and long-time Sony fans will immediately notice that it has more than a passing resemblance to the legendary MDR-7506 headphone – a headphone that's also popular with content creators and sound engineers for monitoring.
The MDR-MV1 is quite special in that Sony says it's been designed specifically for mixing and mastering spatial sound content like Sony's own 360 Reality Audio or Dolby Atmos.
The open-back nature of the headphones reduces unwanted internal reflections and its 40mm dynamic drivers are tuned to have a wide frequency response of 5Hz to 80kHz. High-frequency sounds were a priority because it's these types of sound that give listeners spatial cues.
Comfort was also important for Sony so the MDR-MV1 features breathable earpads and lightweight construction.

The C-80 is a condenser microphone that's based on Sony's higher-end C-800G and C-100 mics.
It features the microphone capsule from the C-100 and uses a two-part metallic anti-vibrational body structure that's similar to the one in the C-800G. This method of construction prevents unwanted microphone body vibration, which results in less noise and a clearer sound.
And to prevent unintentional sonic changes because of distance, the C-80 has a dual diaphragm configuration.
Pricing and availability
The Sony MDR-MV1 headphone and C-80 condenser microphones will be available at Sony stores, select authorised dealers, and online stores in May 2023.
The Sony MDR-MV1 headphone is S$539 while the C-80 condenser microphone is S$649.
