Sony maintains lead in mobile image sensor market, but Samsung and others catching up

Despite the raging Covid-19 pandemic last year, the mobile image sensor market managed to generate a total revenue of $15 billion.

According to the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service report, the global mobile image sensor market grew 13% year-over-year. Sony maintained its top position with 46% revenue share. Next in line are the Samsung System LSI with 29% revenue share and OmniVision Technologies with 10% revenue share.

Since Sony lost Huawei as a customer due to the U.S trade restrictions, Strategy Analytics believes its market dominance will be threatened by Samsung, OmniVision and SK Hynix. Looking ahead, the expansion of multiple cameras and the focus on camera capabilities in smartphones will accelerate the growth of the mobile image sensor market. However, the global chip shortage is likely to hit phone shipments this year and may last till Q2 2022.
