Sony keeps its promise; Z2 series gets PS4 Remote Play

The Z2 series: The Xperia Z2 and the Z2 Tablet.

Remember when we told you that Sony was giving the X2 series remote play capability? Remember how Sony mentioned that it would have news regarding the Z2 Remote Play capability in a few weeks?

Well, who'd have thought that Sony would not only deliver, but also exceed expectations. After all, when Sony stated it would have news on the (then) upcoming Z2 Remote Play function, nobody thought that it meant a release. We expected news of a release date or some sort of progress update, not the release itself.

So it's with great pleasure (and surprise) that we report to you that Sony's officially released the Remote Play update for the masses who own a Z2 or a Z2 tablet. Like the Z3 series, PS4 Remote Play can only be used with a wireless Dualshock 4, you won't be able to play using the touchscreen only.

Surprisingly, there's more to this update than just PS4 Remote Play. Sony's also added in more goodies like PCM and DSD playback, Sony's proprietary DSEE HX tech that restores sound on MP3 or AAC formats, new camera apps, tweaks to the STAMINA mode (including an Ultra setting on the Z2), new SmartWear features, as well as general updates like allowing you to record what you're doing on-screen. The recording apes the PS4's record function, which also allows you to record whatever you're doing on the console for a limited set of time.

Now if only Sony would release a fix to all the issues Masamune (the name for the new 2.0 PS4 firmware) has, that'd be great. You know a firmware has problems when a developer delays a much publicized public alpha just because of it. Weirdly, we don't have any issue with the firmware on our PS4 though, so we can't really complain.
