Sony has acquired Insomniac Games

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that the legendary Insomniac Games will be joining PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios. Insomniac is particularly notable for developing games like Ratchet and Clank and Marvel’s Spider-Man

This news was honestly a long time coming. Insomniac Games have delivered hits for PlayStation consoles time after time, such as Spyro the Dragon on the original PlayStation and Ratchet and Clank on the PlayStation 3. A good chunk of their library are PlayStation exclusives too, and yet they were never acquired as a first-party studio for the platform until now.

Sunset Overdrive became their first Xbox One exclusive back in 2014 and was critically acclaimed too. You do wonder if Microsoft Game Studios will rue this day, though.

Spider-Man was an undeniable hit for the PlayStation 4, selling 13.2 million copies as of July, 2019. There is absolutely no doubt a sequel is well on the way, but Shawn Layden, Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios, also made it clear that Ratchet and Clank will be getting some love too, claiming “We like what they’ve been doing in the Spider-Man franchise and things like Ratchet & Clank are certainly vital series in the present and future. That’s what we’re concentrating on.”

Oh, the upcoming PlayStation 5 is going to be good to me.
