Sony Ericsson Xperia Lineup Getting Android 4.0 Update in March 2012 (Updated)
Update as of April 3, 2012: Sony has posted another update on its blog, which puts the Android 4.0 update for its Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray in mid-April instead of early April.
The remaining devices will also receive the Ice Cream Sandwich update slightly later, sometime in late May to early June 2012.
According to Sony, the update will not be pushed over-the-air. Instead, users will have to download it via its PC Companion and Bridge for Mac. As such, there won't be any update requests or notifications pushed to your Xperia smartphones.
*Update: Sony Ericsson posted on its blog the Android 4.0 update roadmap for its 2011 smartphone portfolio. The update will roll out over several weeks and not all phones will get the upgrade at the same time.
End March / Early April 2012: Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray.
End April / Early May 2012: Sony Ericsson Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini and mini Pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Live with Walkman.
Earlier on, we reported on Sony Ericsson's commitment to upgrading its existing Xperia lineup with Google's latest Android 4.0 OS, followed by a list of devices that will receive the update. In a posting on its Italian Facebook page, the company has given a specific time frame for the update to be pushed onto its Android devices - March 2012.
With the Android 4.0 source code now available to device manufacturers, it's not surprising to hear more forthcoming updates to the existing Android lineup. As of now, Sony Ericsson is the only company that comes with an extensive list of devices, numbering at 11, that will receive the update. This includes:
- Xperia arc
- Xperia arc S
- Xperia PLAY
- Xperia neo
- Xperia neo V
- Xperia mini
- Xperia mini pro
- Xperia pro
- Xperia active
- Xperia ray
- Live with Walkman
So if you're an owner of one of these Xperia devices, be ready for an over-the-air update sometime in March 2012. Do note that the timing of the firmware update is still subjected to changes.
