One of the major conveniences of your smartphone camera over standalone digital cameras has always been the ability to quickly upload photos online. But with the latest version of the Sony Creators’ App, that convenience is coming to Sony's prosumer and professional interchangeable lens cameras as well.

By making some initial settings on the Creators' App (version 2.3 and newer), photos and videos shot using supported Sony cameras will be automatically transferred to cloud storage without going through the smartphone as long as the camera is powered on. These photos and videos uploaded to Sony’s Creators' Cloud can be quickly browsed and edited from various mobile devices. You can check the progress of the upload(s) in the Creators' App or Creators' Cloud Web storage.  You can also be informed of the upload progress via your smartphone’s notification, while on the camera, there will be a status icon displayed too.

Sony said that a Wi-Fi connection is still needed and recommends a stable Wi-Fi environment for the uploading.

Sony cameras supporting this feature include the industrial heavyweights, such as FX3, FX30 and ILX-LR1, professional series like α9 III, α7R V, α7 IV as well as prosumers models like α7CR, α7C II, α6700, ZV-E1, ZV-1 II, ZV-1F. The most recent additions to support this feature (from March 2024) according to Sony are the the α1 and α7S III cameras.

However, this feature only works with Sony’s Creators’ Cloud and not other web storage services. If you register an eligible Sony camera, you can get 25GB of free cloud storage. There are also more expensive tiers of 100GB and 500GB with pricing varying depending on the region.

Apart from this convenient feature, the Creator’s App also allows users to use the smartphone as remote control for the camera as well as enhance a camera’s functions like importing a LUT file, or LOOK profile, of a video into the camera.

In addition, you can use Master Cut(Beta) feature of Creators’ Cloud for basic editing. Master Cut(Beta) is a cloud-based application powered by artificial intelligence, which accelerates pre-editing by using camera metadata. This gives users a quick, easy, and high-quality pre-editing of video content through image stabilisation, compensating for lens focusing, volume optimisation, normalising uneven audio between clips, as well as colour correction before transferring to a non-linear editing software tool.
