Sony adds an improved G-Master series 24-70mm zoom lens to its repertoire

Sony Singapore today (28 April 2022) announced the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II (model number SEL2470GM2), marking the 67th mirrorless E-mount lens it has in its lineup for professional photographers, videographers, and hybrid content creators.

This new lens is an updated model to its predecessor, which Sony said they’ve improved based on user feedback. Sony also added that the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens is the world’s smallest and lightest F2.8 standard zoom lens available today.

Upgrades that are immediately visible are its smaller footprint and weight reduction. When compared to the older model, the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is 16mm shorter (119.9 vs 136mm) and nearly 20% lighter (695g vs 886g). Despite the size difference, the newer model has more lens elements (20 vs 18), a bigger magnification ratio (0.32x vs 0.24x), and has other perks like improved bokeh, improved autofocus, and better control.

Sony said the new lens uses a redesigned optical path that packs five aspherical elements within, two of which are high-precision extreme aspherical lens elements. Additionally, it has two ED (extra-low dispersion) and two Super ED glass elements, and a new floating focus mechanism. Together, the lens offers improved chromatic aberration, astigmatism, distortion and, coma, for better zoom resolution across the entire image area at all zoom levels and aperture settings.

The updated anti-reflective Nano AR Coating II helps to further subdue flare and ghosting, while its 11-blade aperture unit helps the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II get even more circular bokeh effects.

Sony said that the improved autofocus features make its focusing “two times better” than the previous model, attributing it to the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II’s four XD Linear Motors and advanced lens control. For filmmakers, the newly developed aperture unit and lens technology help reduce focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift when zooming. The lens also supports breathing compensation features on Alpha series cameras by the brand (oh, if you haven’t, check out our Sony Alpha 7 IV review here).

Improved controls come in the form of adjustable zoom ring torque (tight or smooth), a new aperture ring with click on/off switch and iris-locking switch, two customisable focus hold buttons, improved linear focus for manual use, a new lens hood design for an opening to control circular polarising filters, and better center of gravity.

Sony’s new FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II zoom lens will be available at “select retail shops” and online stores from June-July 2022 onwards. There’s no official pricing yet, but you can look at the older model for a ballpark price (as of writing, S$3,199).
