Singtel hands out free insurance plans for its postpaid users with Singtel Bill Protect

Singtel launches Singtel Bill Protect with Etiqa at Bugis Junction.

Singtel and Etiqa today (4 May 2023) launched Singtel Bill Protect, a unique and complimentary telco-plan-with-insurance combo in Singapore.

Huh, my phone plan comes with free insurance? How to get?

In short, eligible customers can pick up a free insurance plan from Singtel that lasts 12 months. It offers two benefits. The retrenchment benefit lets you claim up to six times your last eligible Singtel bill, up to S$600, to offset bill costs in the event of retrenchment. The other benefit covers accidental death, which gives the subscriber’s loved ones up to 12 times the subscriber’s Singtel bill, up to S$1,200, in one lump sum.

How the retrenchment claim works with Singtel Bill Protect.

Eligible subscribers are Singaporean and Singapore Permanent Resident customers aged between 17 and 65, with Singtel Postpaid Personal Mobile lines residing in Singapore.

To grab the free insurance plan, visit https://www.singtel.com/personal/my-account/login and sign in using your Singtel OnePass credentials. The item is called Singtel Bill Protect, and the rest of the steps are easy: double-check all your pre-filled data, be aware of the insurance product along with its terms and conditions, and you’re good to go. If you want, you can also head down to a Singtel shop and ask for assistance.

Singtel said that it would evaluate the popularity of its telco bill-and-insurance combo before deciding whether to continue with this collaboration for its subscribers and customers past these initial 12 months.

Why is Singtel doing this?

Summary of Singtel Bill Protect insured protections and benefits.

In the Singtel Bill Protect’s official statement here, the telco quoted labour market estimates forecasted by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower. It showed that Singapore retrenchments have risen for three quarters in a row. That finding doesn’t consider other economic pressures like inflation, which has yet to subside.

Against this backdrop, Singtel said it wanted to help its subscribers alleviate some of its burdens to minimise the impact of adverse conditions.

“Staying connected has become an essential part of modern lifestyle. By offering our new Singtel Bill Protect plan to our postpaid customers for free, we aim to help ease the strain of life’s uncertainties by ensuring that our customers impacted by adverse conditions like retrenchment can stay connected with their communities using Singtel's superior network without worrying about their bills. That frees up their mind to focus on other more pressing priorities,” said Anna Yip, CEO, Consumer Singapore, Singtel.

This is not the first time Singtel is combining its services and products with an insurance add-on. The telco also has other variants like Singtel Life Protect, Singtel Wealth Protect, and Singtel Health Protect, on top of an insurance savings plan via Singtel Dash.

Where can I learn more about Singtel Bill Protect?

Besides going to its official landing page here, you can also visit the Singtel Bill Protect booth at Bugis Junction between 4 May and 7 May 2023.

The booth operates from 11AM to 9PM on those days, where visitors can talk to on-site Singtel staff and Etiqa’s assurance managers to learn more about Singtel Bill Protect and other Etiqa products.

Singtel postpaid customers also stand a chance to win an Apple iPhone 14 – simply prove that you are a Singtel postpaid user to the claw machine operators on-site. (Editorial note: we’ve tried, it’s not as rigged as an arcade claw machine, but it is not an easy game either).

Non-Singtel subscribers can also “earn” a chance at the claw machine by sitting in for an insurance and financial planning chat with the Etiqa managers at the venue.

The booth also has light refreshments, confectionery, and Singtel Bill Protect stickers up for grabs, with limited quantities available.
