Singtel celebrates Earth Hour 2023 by handing out power-saving timer plugs to existing customers

Singtel would like to encourage its customers to participate in Earth Hour and the WWFS' Kosong Plan.

Singtel has been supporting the World Wildlife Fund Singapore's (WWFS) Earth Hour since 2010. In case you've not heard of Earth Hour, it's a grassroots international movement by WWF that encourages people and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for an hour every year.

This year, Singtel would like to rope in its existing customers to participate in Earth Hour 2023. To take part in WWFS' Kosong Plan,  Singtel customers can get a complimentary timer plug from the telco, which lets customers automate their electricity usage when the attached appliances aren't actively used.

The Singtel timer plug that's given away to existing Singtel customers who pledge to WWFS' Kosong Plan.

To redeem the plug, follow the instructions on Singtel's landing page here. The plug is available from now (20 March) to 2 April 2023

The redeeming customer must be an existing Singtel Postpaid Mobile or Singtel Broadband (fibre or TV) customer. You must complete the pledge via the URLs above and receive an email confirmation.

Once that's done, the customer can visit one of the following Singtel Shops during operating hours to collect the plug: Comcentre, Tampines Mall, Parkway Parade, Ang Mo Kio Hub, Bugis Junction, Jurong Point, Causeway Point. Timer plugs are available while stocks last.

The T&Cs (PDF link here) contain instructions on exchanging a defective timer plug for a working one if you have kosong luck with electronics.

According to NEA, devices and appliances relying on standby power (plugged in, powered on, but not in active use) can account for up to 10% of an average home's electricity bill. So, the timer plug would at least reduce some standby power usage, which can lead to minor bill savings.

Singtel's other Earth Hour 2023 efforts

Unlike other companies that pass the buck down to customers at the latter's expense (like excluding charging adapters from products), Singtel is also taking the initiative to do its part for Earth Hour 2023.

Singtel is donating S$25,000 to the WWFS' Conservation Fund, and participating in WWFS' Earth Hour Switch Off campaign by switching off and/or dimming its non-essential lights at its corporate offices and seven Singtel retail shops for one hour (8.30 PM to 9.30 PM on 25 March 2023). So, don't freak out if you're in the shop and it's suddenly a little darker than usual.

Also, Singtel once said that its new Comcentre campus would be Singapore's first end-to-end, carbon-neutral development from its inception until its operation.
