SingTel Announces Singapore's First 4G Service for Tablets

SingTel today announced that it will be bringing Singapore's first 4G service for tablets on 28th August.

Similar to the Prestige 75 plan that was rolled out last year, the new Prestige 75 plans for tablets offer consumers theoretical download speeds of up to 75Mbps and typical download speeds between 3.4Mbps and 12Mbps. In short, the mobile Internet access is more than three times faster than the current 21Mbps 3G tablet services, with one-fifth of the network latency.

At launch, SingTel will be offering two tablet models: the ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TL and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 (LTE). The telco is working with leading manufacturers to expand its range of tablet options over time.

SingTel will also launch the mio TV Play app for the Android tablets on 28th August to allow consumers to take advantage of the high speed video streaming capabilities of its 4G LTE network.

The mio TV Play app will give consumers access to an extensive library of on-demand movies, including new release Hollywood blockbusters and the latest titles from around the world. Movies will be offered from $2.99, and users can charge their purchases to their SingTel bill or credit card. However, the app is only pre-loaded into the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 (LTE).

Mr Yuen Kuan Moon, SingTel's CEO Consumer Singapore, said: “With the high speeds and low latency performance of our 4G network, tablet users will enjoy the ultimate multimedia experience for their videos, games, music and online content. We were the first to bring 4G smartphones to Singapore, and we are thrilled to be the first to put 4G tablets into the hands of our customers. We are rapidly expanding our 4G network coverage, and we are well on track to achieve island wide coverage early next year."

Earlier in June, SingTel was the first telco to announce the 4G service plans for smartphones. We were among the first to test out its 4G LTE network, and found the experience to be very positive. In addition, most of the train stations appeared to be 4G ready when we went around the island to assess the 4G reception.

M1 will be making its announcement on tiered smartphone plans alongside the launch of its 4G LTE services towards the end of Q3 while StarHub will share more information on its LTE devices and services later this year.
