The Singapore Tourism Board is partnering with Pokémon Go to add new PokéStops
As if you needed another reason to play Pokemon Go.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has teamed up with Pokemon Go developer Niantic for their SingapoRediscovers campaign. Players in Singapore will now notice up to 300 new in-game PokeStops and gyms where they can find Pokemon and participate in raids. The partnership is part of an effort to encourage local tourism.
STB’s brand director Lim Shoo Ling said:
As they pursue their favourite Pokemon across Singapore, we hope players will explore our precincts, discover hidden gems, and support local business – while staying safe and observing the necessary precautions.
These new PokeStops and gyms can be found at hotels, attractions, retailers, food and beverage stores and tour ticketing booths across Singapore. Specifically, you’ll find new PokeStops in the following 10 precincts:
- Changi and East Coast
- Chinatown
- The Civic District
- Joo Chiat and Katong
- Kampong Glam
- Little India
- Mandai and Kranji
- Marina Bay
- Orchard Road
- Sentosa
These new PokeStops and Gyms will be easily distinguishable, due to an in-app banner for the SingapoRediscovers campaign. Tapping on the banner will bring you to the campaign’s website, displaying promotions available at various tourism and lifestyle establishments. STB is also planning to hold unique raid battles in a few areas, but you’ll have to wait for more information on that.
Obviously, the intent behind this initiative isn't just to get players walking around Singapore - but support local businesses while doing so. Maybe after a hefty raid, you’ll want to sit down at a restaurant nearby, or check out some other businesses that happen to be in the area.
Wherever you go and whatever you do, stay safe! There’s still a pandemic going on, after all.
