Sigma just announced a new camera called the BF. And as you can probably tell from the photos here, it looks unlike any other camera.
That’s because Sigma intentionally designed the BF to be as simple to use as possible. According to Sigma, the BF “balances performance with simplicity and returns the focus to what matters most: your photographs.”

To achieve that aim, Sigma ditched all the unnecessary stuff. At the back, all you get is a 2.1-million dot touch display, a multi-function dial wheel, and three touch buttons. Sigm says that’s all you need to access the BF’s settings. Even my little Fujifilm X100VI has more wheels and buttons.
There’s no viewfinder, no hot shoe, no articulating screen, and it doesn’t even have an SD card slot. It comes with 230GB of internal storage that Sigma claims is good for over 14,000 JPEGS or over 4,300 RAW files. Photos can be transferred out of the BF using the USB-C port, which supports speeds of up to 10Gbps.

The BF’s body is milled from a single block of aluminium and it will be available in black and silver. Inside, you’ll find a 24MP full-frame sensor. It uses the L-mount so there’s no shortage of lens for you to pair with it. Its autofocus uses a mix of phase and contrast detection. Like most modern cameras, the BF will come with 13 filters that will allow users to achieve their desired look without the need for post-processing.
On first impressions, the BF is easily one of the most interesting cameras in recent times. It’s a genuine attempt at doing something different and perhaps even better. In my mind, the BF attempts to make the shooting experience as smartphone-like as possible, and that’s no bad thing. Not everyone wants to fuss around with the exposure triangle. For every person who loves the manual controls of, say, a Fujifilm, I’m sure there’s an equal number of people who want to take photos with a large high-quality sensor but in a way that’s not intimidating and not all that different from their smartphone.
