Sharp says its new Audio 8A-C22CX1 soundbar is the first to support 22.2ch audio format of “MPEG-4 AAC” used in 8K broadcasting. To do this, the soundbar comes with a three-way speaker configuration with midrange, tweeter, and woofer while six digital amplifiers drive the speakers independently to reproduce a richly detailed sound field.

What it means

The 22.2 “MPEG-4 AAC” standard used in 8K broadcasting creates a three-dimensional sound effect as though speakers are positioned top, bottom, front, back, left, and right. The 8A-C22CX1 creates this using “OPSODIS” stereophonic sound reproduction jointly developed by Kashima Construction and the University of Southampton and is able to recreate this from a single speaker installed in front of the listener.

There are 7 pre-set sound modes. Image courtesy of Sharp.

Besides support for 8K, the soundbar can also create the same effect for current 4K digital broadcasts using 2ch / 5.1ch audio signals.

It also supports 4K pass-through meaning that you’ll be able to enjoy 4K from devices that output the 4K signal (such as a 4K Blu-ray player) through the soundbar and onwards to the TV in true 4K quality all via HDMI. It also has Dolby Vision pass-through and Dolby Atmos so it can playback high-resolution sound sources, including from a USB memory device.

Users can choose from seven pre-set sound modes (including Cinema, Music, Sport, News, and Night) that will best suit their content and enjoy optimised sound effects based on each scene. For conversation audio enhancements, users can use the “Clear Voice” feature through the remote control to enhance human voices in movies and television programmes.
