Just days after announcing the sale of its consumer division, Sennheiser is now announcing a new flagship in-ear monitor. Meet the new IE 900.

This new model sits on top of the IE 800 S, providing fussy and well-heeled listeners what Sennheiser claims to be the ultimate in portable audio.

Inside, the IE 900 features Sennheiser’s new 7mm-large X3R transducers, which are refined versions of the XWB transducers found in the IE 300

To get the best out of them, they are housed in a precision-milled aluminium chassis that features a specially-designed triple-chamber absorber system that removes unwanted resonances and amplifies all the right notes.

The IE 900 has gold-plated MMCX connectors and comes with para-aramid reinforced cables that’s been tested to withstand thousands of bend cycles. Since this is a product targeted at enthusiasts, the IE 900 comes with a 3.5mm single-ended cable and additional 2.5mm and 4.4mm balanced cables that’s handy for plugging into digital audio players and portable amplifiers.

The IE 900 also comes with three pairs of silicone ear tips and three pairs of foam ear tips.

**Update on 3 July 2021**

The IE 900 is paired, in this instance, with the Kann Alpha DAP from Astell & Kern.

The Sennheiser IE 900 has just been officially launched in Singapore and these new flagship IEMs will go on sale on Monday (5 July).

I also had the chance to spend some time with them at the launch event and I left feeling impressed.

It was only a short 30-minute session but it's clear that the IE900 is a significant step-up from the IE 300. Tonally, it's more balanced and refined. Bass is less emphatic but more accurate, the mid-range richer, and the treble smoother. And even though their drivers share similarities, the IE900 has superior detail retrieval and resolution.

As I listened, I'm constantly reminded of the amazing Sonoma M1 headphone system that I tested some years back. The IE 900 evokes the same balanced tonality and sense of air and speed. I'll need more time with them to be sure but the IE 900 certainly sounded promising.

Pricing and availability

The Sennheiser IE 900 will be available in Singapore from 5 July 2021 at a price of S$1,999. You should be able to find it on the Sennheiser Online Store and the Sennheiser Flagship Store on Lazada. Time to start saving up.
